Become a Machinist with FRCC – Shop Tour
I’m so excited to learn about all the opportunities for workforce development on the Front Range and this is no exception. The Colorado Maker Hub Meetup Group visited Front Range Community College – Precision Machining Technology Lab in Longmont.
George Newman, Program Director greeted us and shared with us the huge strides FRCC is making serving the manufacturing community in Northern Colorado. He reinforced with data that manufacturers are short staffed in skilled machinists and Front Range Community is the leading school in the area helping ease that gap.
The shop contains rows of equipment such that students can learn hands-on real time during class time. Equipment includes lathes, CNC machines, Drill presses as well as the program includes comprehensive programming classes for the CNC and modeling parts using Solid Works.
During the tour, Russ, our tour guide showed us how to make a key chain! We were able to get hands-on with the equipment and at the end of the tour walked away with a customized key chain!
This was a great time and a wonderful introduction to another highly sought after skill needed in today’s workforce. Machining classes are available as a degree program as well as continuing education in a non-degree program.
Keep in touch with the Colorado Maker Hub Meetup Group and join us for more tours like this one and additional manufacturers on the Front Range!
